The Utiel Railroad Station: Origins, Development, and Failure of a Major Railroad Project
Abstract:
From the earliest studies, the Utiel (Valencia) railway station was designed as an intermediate station on the so-called “direct” Madrid-Valencia line. However, for political and commercial reasons, for 62 years (until 1947) it functioned as a true “terminal” station for the Valencia–Utiel section, developing intense commercial activity with a catchment area that encompassed a vast region rich in wine production as well as other agricultural products. When the Baeza–Utiel line was planned in 1927 (as part of the major cross-country project between Algeciras and Saint-Girons, in France), connecting with the Madrid–Valencia line in Utiel, the Utiel station was completely expanded and renovated to accommodate the anticipated volume of passenger and freight traffic, in line with its role as a major railway hub.

Spain and Latin America at the Dawn of the Great Information Superhighways
Abstract:
This article presents a case study and contributes to the international debate from a multidisciplinary perspective that combines geopolitics and business history. Its aim is to shed light on the role of Spain and Latin America in shaping the global telecommunications system, without claiming to be exhaustive. More specifically, it achieves this by examining Telefónica’s role in the creation of international infrastructure as a means of integrating into the global telecommunications system. This continues the effort begun in previous works, which thematically focused on submarine cables and satellites in relation to the earlier stages of internationalization. Its main contribution lies in an analysis grounded in business history, drawing on primary sources—particularly from Telefónica and its group—and a substantial body of secondary literature.

The Development of the Single European Transport Area: The History of the Trans-European Transport Network
Abstract:
This paper focuses on analyzing the development of the common transport infrastructure policy, from its origins in the 1970s to the present day, including its designation in the Maastricht Treaty as a priority area for advancing the Union’s territorial, social, and economic cohesion. In summary, we will examine the evolution of the development guidelines for the Trans-European Transport Network over the years, as well as the intense budgetary debates that have taken place among the various EU institutions in order to secure the necessary funding for the implementation of these projects.

Trams in Santander: The Beginnings of Urban Transportation, 1846–1923
Abstract:
This article examines the early development of urban transportation in the city of Santander within its historical, socioeconomic, and territorial context. In addition, special attention is given to strategies related to the urbanization process and the integration of new areas. The period covered spans from the second half of the 19th century to the 1920s. As the small population center grew in terms of both population and economic activity and expanded spatially, the need for transportation within the municipality and to its immediate surroundings began to emerge. These transportation demands received varied responses from private developers and companies, which were influenced by other interests, such as real estate. In the case of Santander, the development of infrastructure and urban transportation systems occurred primarily in conjunction with the emergence of the first residential and recreational activities in the Sardinero seaside resort, which enabled its early connection to the city center and its integration into the urban fabric. These dynamics related to transportation and accessibility to different areas are reflected in the current configuration of the urban space.
