Stories of Engineers in Latin America.
Between the State and Productive Challenges, 1870–1980.
El Colegio de México, 2025
The monograph Stories of Engineers in Latin America: Between the State and Productive Challenges, 1870–1980 examines, in fourteen chapters, the rise of engineering and engineers as central actors in industrialization, modernization, and technological change in Latin American economies during the era of globalization and development (1870–1980). What was their role in the circulation of knowledge and technologies—as technological intermediaries, thinkers, planners, and agents of innovation—from the era of exports through the Cold War?
By analyzing local experiences and transnational dynamics, this book examines the career paths and performance of engineers and experts as they face the challenges, dilemmas, and efforts related to growth and development in Latin America, both in the public and private sectors: in the extractive industries, the energy sector, and the agricultural sector, particularly in state-owned enterprises.
